Sovata is a spa with continuous operation, well known for its lakes with healing waters. In documents, Sovata is certified in 1597 as a place for healing of diseases.

Lacul Ursu, formed in 1875, is one of the largest heliothermal salt lakes in Europe. The other salt water lakes are: Lacul Negru, Lacul Roşu and Verde, Lacul Aluniş, Lacul Mierlei, Lacul Piroşca.

The treatment resort was arranged in 1875 around Lacul Ursu.
